The Walkmen @ Oxford o2 academy 22/01/11

On Saturday night our very own Oxford o2 Academy played host to the New York based indie-rock giants The Walkmen who have been hailed as “the most under-rated band in the world” by our very own Mr. Jowett (ed. “woop woop!”). The gig was played in the upstairs venue of the o2 academy, (the old Zodiac to those of a certain age) and the fact that this band being so obviously worthy of much larger venues than this small room lead to a very intimate and personal sell out show.
For me, the performance was near perfect with the band flitting between such anthemic classics as ‘The Rat’ and the slower more brooding tracks like ‘We’ve Been Had’. What’s more is that when vocalist Hamilton Leithauser thanked the audience for coming and commented on the beauty of our city he sounded like he meant it, his sincerity struck a chord with me and pleased me to see humble rock stars who are genuinely appreciative of their audience. Something that so many modern rock-stars are lacking in.
For all of those present in the tight, cramped, sweaty room, witnessed something very special indeed. A venue which has been played by greats such as Radiohead and Foals can now add The Walkmen to this list with no reservations of grandeur; a night to remember!
