Tiffany Page interview

Last Saturday was the Cornbury music festival held in Charlbury in Oxfordshire. Over the last few years the publicity surrounding this event has grown massively, and acts like Tiffany Page are the reason why. She opened up on the main stage, a very tricky job for any musician. Her set was started with Walk Away Slow, one of her first singles. The at first small crowd increased immeasurably as families set up their picnics and the like and headed down to catch her set. By the end, every man and his dog was seen rocking out to her short, sharp, instantly memorable tunes.
She ended with a cover of Rihanna’s Rude which she made her own adding a Tiffany Page stamp all over the song. After her show she played a small acoustic gig for about 20 people, Callum and Cydney caught up with her afterwards.
How did Glastonbury go last week?

Honestly, it was so good. I never thought I’d say “Hello Glastonbury”.

Which stage where you on?

I was in the Q tent. It was the Queens Head stage for Q magazine, for new artists and stuff.

Have you played any other big festivals?

We played Hard Rock Calling, which was amazing. We’ve actually got two others lined up; both V Festivals. I’m really looking forward to because I’ve just moved near Chelmsford, I’m so excited for everyone to come and see me.

How did your support slot with Hole come about?

I don’t know, I just suddenly got a call saying that I was supporting her. She actually came to see a gig that I was playing but I was ill so I didn’t turn up but apparently she stayed and watched the next band on. I was kicking myself, I was really really happy that I actually got the tour as well.

What has been your most embarrassing moment on stage?

I don’t know, it’s quite juvenile. I think one of the boys farted or something and you know you breath it in through your mouth (fakes being sick) but I had to just carry on, with the taste.

If you were part of a circus, what character would you be?

I quite like the people that walk on balls

How do you remember your lyrics?

It’s other peoples lyrics that I can’t remember very well, so covers for me are very difficult without a sheet of paper all the time, if I’ve sung them about ten times like the Rude Boi cover we’ve done I know the words now. My songs because they’ve come from me I know the story of what I’m singing so I can relate to that song even more so than other people’s songs. I guess it just comes naturally, remembering lyrics

Why did you choose the Rude Boi cover?

I don’t know. I just thought it would be a great cover to do, it’s got great lyrics. We wanted to find a song that was different that people probably wouldn’t try covering, we tried to just make it completely our own, and take the song for the song not for Rihanna.

Have you got any aims or ambitions for the rest of this year?
Just loads more gigging. I’m looking forward to my album coming out in September. My ambitions hmmm. I don’t know just to carry on and gig and just build a bigger and bigger fan base and get better and better really.

Is it hard having finished your album but having to wait till September for its release?
Yeah, it is. I can’t wait to show my friends some of the songs, I don’t have a copy of it; I gave it away, stupidly, so I don’t have a copy to show them and I’m like “Oh damn, why are you playing that song to people, play this song” but I don’t have it to give them.

What do you prefer, gigs or festivals?

They’re completely different. Festivals outside I’m still getting used to. Festivals in a tent…brilliant, because you’re all hot and sweaty. Gigs are cool because they’re yours or if your supporting its funny but they’re still kind of yours and I guess its inside a space, its dark, its more eveningy. But I do love day festivals.

What bands are you listening to at the moment?

I’m actually listening to Red Hot Chili Peppers again. (I point out my Red Hot Chili Peppers t-shirt) Oh my god, I totally didn’t see that I promise you, that’s amazing. Blood Sugar Sex Magik; amazing amazing album, just got into that. I’m listening to a lot of Neil Young because its summer. He played Hard Rock Calling last year Yeah I know, and Glastonbury. A friend of mine co-manages him and apparently he flew in last year in a helicopter. I couldn’t go because my boyfriend at the time was like (puts on poor man accent) “No, you can’t go to a festival with another boy” and I was like “Dammit!” so I missed him.

What will you be doing this summer when you’re not playing gigs or festivals?

What will I be doing? Writing, loads more writing, and just preparing myself for the second album that’s heavier, I’m growing up and growing up all the time especially with every gig you do you get better and better. I’m just training myself now to write for the next album so it’s the best it possibly can be.

Have you got any more singles coming out before the release?

Yeah, but I’m not sure which one yet
